Service Technician (Technologies)

Cape Town

NovaMarine, a division of the Sturrock Grindrod Maritime Group, is looking to secure the permanent services of a Service Technician within our Technologies Division.

All suitably qualified and experienced candidates are invited to apply.

The purpose of a Service Technician is to be responsible for servicing of technologies equipment, and ensuring that all work and equipment comply with prescribed standards and applicable legislation.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure that all health and safety rules and regulations along with equipment are adhered to according to ISO, SABS, MARPOL, SOLAS and applicable OEM standards
  • Service and recondition of oil in water separators, reverse osmosis plants, evaporative freshwater generators, centrifuges, cathodic marine growth protection systems, impressed current corrosion systems, electrical system diagnostics and fault finding, and stern tube sealing systems
  • Test equipment according to instructions before commencement of work
  • Conduct regular site audits and make recommendations to Management on how to keep a safe working environment
  • Ensure that all administration such as job cards and marking of equipment is up to date and completed timeously
  • Ensure that the correct personal protective equipment and all the necessary safety measures are put in place
  • Always maintain a clean and tidy workshop / work site
  • Act as team leader managing and guiding junior service technicians / assistants according to assigned scope of work
  • Liaise directly with customers, suppliers, and OEM’s

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Minimum Matric or equivalent
  • Minimum trade qualification / red seal qualification in the mechanical engineering space (e.g., fitter, machinist, marine diesel mechanic) and / or marine engineering qualification
  • Must be willing to undergo OEM training
  • Skilled in electrical diagnostics and electrical circuits

Experience

  • Five years experience in a multi-skilled mechanical role within the marine environment focused on all ship’s auxiliary equipment
  • Basic ships electrical infrastructure knowledge will be advantageous
  • Chief engineering or 2nd engineering ticket will be advantageous
  • Experience as an OEM representative or makers man will be advantageous

Skills, competencies and attributes

  • Must be able to travel offshore and locally as operationally required
  • Must be in possession of a valid and clean code 08 license
  • A code 10 licence will be advantageous
  • Be physically fit and able to work in harsh conditions
  • The ability to interact with customers and employees
  • Make and action decisions in an effective manner
  • Well organised, sober habits and high attention to detail
  • Advanced computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is essential
  • Strong mechanical
  • Team leader abilities
  • Able to work after hours when required
